The Conservation Story: Wild Africa Experiences is partnering with the Black Eagle Project Roodekrans and its conservation partners in the Sugarbush Ridges Coalition to bring you this amazing experience. All profits raised through the BEMR are used to fund the salaries and equipment for two full-time Conservation Rangers that prevent the many urban pressures that threaten this precious biodiversity and environment.

The BEPR and SRC are environmentally focussed groups of NPOs and volunteers, working on the Krugersdorp and Roodekrans ridges. These ridge systems are maintained as a relatively pristine wilderness, in excellent ecological condition. This is no mean feat in an urban environment, and the SRC coalition is very proud of this achievement, however it requires volunteers, resources and constant vigilance to keep these ridges remarkable!

About the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens – The Gardens and Ridge are home to an abundance of wildlife with about 240 bird species recorded on site including a breeding pair of Black Eagles who nest on the cliffs near the waterfall. A surprising number of mammal species have also been recorded.  The presence of these rather secretive animals is a sign that the ecosystem of the estate remain viable, despite being surrounded by development.

The West Rand Ridges are not only critical black eagle hunting grounds for prey species such as guineafowl, scrub hare and dassies but also support several other threatened plant and animal species, including the last remaining viable population on earth of the ‘Critically Endangered’ Albertina Sisulu Orchid, as well as a healthy herd of ‘Endangered’ Mountain Reedbuck. This conservation asset is also a highly scenic open space which contributes enormously to the sense of place of the West Rand region and is an important conservation area for Gauteng and South Africa.

Let’s celebrate the beautiful country we have and support conservation efforts.

Special mention – In the spirit of encouraging the local community, we are offering a special VIP entrance for 2025 for pensioners (60 years +), the disabled and wheelchair-bound, as well as children under 8 years on the 2km route. Best of all, entry is absolutely free for these participants!

We are offering an unforgettable 2km trail route that explores the nooks and crannies of the enchanting gardens! This route is specially designed to be wheelchair, pram, pensioner and child-friendly, ensuring everyone can revel in the beauty of nature while enjoying a fun and exciting trail. Come experience the thrill of the trail in a welcoming and inclusive environment, perfect for families and friends to make lasting memories together.

We encourage VIP participants to use this opportunity to explore the gardens   – don’t forget to book though, and all VIPs must arrive at the Botanical Garden before 8am with their tickets to receive their free entry pass.
